The Nightly Bedtime Battle

The moon begins its nightly climb,

A sign for peace and quiet time.

My sleepy head begins to droop,

But from the stairs, I hear a whoop!

"Just one more story, please, oh please?"

A little voice, with wobbly knees.

"I'm thirsty now, I need a drink!"

Another one, a clever wink.

The third declares a sudden need

To plant and water a tiny seed.

The blankets warm, the pillows deep,

But still my darlings will not sleep.

I tuck in Seth, then Evan too,

Then Ava says, "I love you!"

A final hug, a whispered song,

Oh, how the bedtime battle's long.

At last, the house is hushed and still,

They've conquered their determined will.

I settle down, a weary sigh,

And close my own tired, heavy eye.
